CSI Webinar – Substitutions
March 6, 2-3:30pm ET

Speaker: Gregory Markling, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, MOA Architectural Partnership

Description: The substitution process during construction is critical to the ultimate success of any project. Often, substitutions are handled by architects, contractors, and material suppliers in ways that are consistent with the intent of their use as stipulated in the Contract Documents. It is of utmost importance that all members of the design and construction team clearly understand the purpose and intent of substitutions in the construction process. In addition, from the product representative’s perspective, there is nothing more frustrating that to “get specified” only to lose the project to a competitor; from the Contractor’s perspective, there is great pressure to “buy out” the project for the lowest dollar possible; from the design professional/specifiers perspective, there is a compelling desire to specify the right products and actually “get what was specified.” How can all members of the design and construction team get what they want out of this process, and still serve the Owner who is paying for the project in the first place? In this session, you will gain a better understanding of the contractual issues and practical challenges regarding substitutions in the construction industry, and become better equipped to properly participate in this critical process as a member of the construction team.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the contractual responsibilities of the Contractor, Design Professional/Specifier, and Product Representative regarding substitutions.
  • Understand the proper procedures for requesting and securing substitutions.
  • Learn the benefits and potential pitfalls of substitutions on the end-product of the construction process.

CSI Webinar - Sustainable Solutions: Vinyl in Design
March 11, 2-3:30pm ET

Speaker: Terry Murphy, LEED AP, The Vinyl Institute

Description: This program is intended to familiarize architects and designers with the range of solutions vinyl provides for today’s design challenges. What has become clear recently is that materials and products having the lowest overall environmental impacts are generally the best choice from a "green" perspective. The many "green listings" are probably well intentioned, but there are often many negative aspects associated with products which are first thought to be better than others in the eyes of their proponents.

Vinyl is, in fact, a good choice for the environment in many applications. The objective of this session is to educate design professionals about all aspects of a common and widely accepted material which is used in many building applications. Hundreds of millions of people get clean drinking water delivered to them daily through PVC pipe. Vinyl I.V. bags save the lives of millions more each year and keep our blood supply safe. Modern hospital infection control is made possible in part by use of vinyl flooring and fabrics. The use of plastics in building and construction is on the rise. Since every project is likely to contain at least some vinyl, it is important to learn about this essential material.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the two raw materials used to make vinyl
  • List two products that save energy in use
  • Name the ingredient that makes vinyl resistant to fire

CSI Webinar: Getting and Holding Specifications
Mar 27, 2-3:30pm ET

Speaker: Michael Chambers, FCSI, FAIA, Technical Director, SB Architects

Description: Architects and specifiers have long considered product manufacturers to be necessary evils, always trying to sell you products when you not buying. However, it is possible for product manufacturers and representatives to demonstrate their industry expertise and become critical partners in the success of projects. This program discusses basic marketing strategy for product manufacturers and representatives on how to effectively get specified and get specifiers to hold specifications against unnecessary or improper substitutions. The key marketing tools to accomplish this are specifications and continuing education. This program will offer key strategies to effectively market specifiers through the use of specifications and education.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how to become industry experts in the eyes of design professionals.
  • Receive specific strategies and tools for maximizing sales calls, networking, and continuing education programs.
  • Become familiar with specific techniques for getting specified, helping design professionals hold specifications and minimizing substitutions.
