Student Membership Committee Announcement

About four years ago, I led an ad hoc committee appointed to understand the student member category.  What the committee discovered was that technically, per Institute, there were no longer student chapters (except for a lone remaining student chapter in Oklahoma). Student members are actually members of the Chapter at large. With this knowledge, the Board set up a standing committee three years ago, the Student Membership Committee (SMC).

This new committee was an overhaul of the way our Chapter approached student members. Traditionally, we dealt mostly with Dunwoody College of Technolgy’s architectural students. We had set up a “student chapter” several years ago at the school. Chapter participation with the student chapter was tenuous at best and virtually non-existent the last few years. The process now is to have students join independently of the school at which they are enrolled and to integrate them directly into the Chapter. This gives the student members greater access to our programs, and more importantly, the networking that we always promote to non-members. This new approach is the best way for students to meet future, potential employers and mentors, and for employers to meet potential employees.

The Student Membership Committee is in its third year. Unfortunately, the committee struggled the first year and did not move forward at all last year, essentially disbanding. Thus, at this time, it is my goal to restart the committee and get up to speed as quickly as possible. As the “construction educators,” this presents an opportunity for members interested in joining this committee to have input in shaping the committee’s functions, determining its goals, implementing procedures, and promoting benefits of student membership in CSI to area educational institutions with a construction curriculum.

If you are interested in joining, please reply to the e-mail address posted below with your name, e-mail address, and phone number.  Once we have enough committee members signed up, we will then establish meeting dates, times, and locations.
