December Chapter Meeting

"Changes in Attitude, Changes in Latitude: Building Use Conversions"

Tour and Presentation of The Westin, Minneapolis (formerly the Farmer and Mechanics Bank Building)

Join us on December 10, 2007 for an opportunity to tour The Westin Minneapolis Hotel.  This project consisted of converting the historic Farmer and Mechanics Bank Building and adjoining 10 story office tower into a 214-key, 214,000 squa re feet, luxury hotel complete with a restaurant, bar, and conference center.  The project team was lead by the Ryan Companies US, Inc. (design-builder) and consisted of Elness, Swenson, Graham (architect) and Meyer, Borgman, and Johnson (structural engineer). With initial project conception occurring nearly five years ago, the project finally began construction in the spring of 2006 and was completed in May of 2007. Key challenges of this project included:

  • "Unique" column layouts that resulted in 60 different room configurations for the 214 room hotel.  Only 8 rooms have the same configuration.
  • Adding an eleventh floor to the ten-story office tower without taking off the roof.
  • Modifying the existing structural system to accommodate new elevators and 72 tons of water for the new pool.

Please join us for the tour and presentation to learn more about this unique project and the challenges that had to be overcome.
