Seminar: “Why Floors Fail: A look at the effects of moisture, substrate, and installation materials ”
April 22, 2008, INSTALL Twin Cities Training Center, 670 Olive St., St. Paul, MN 55130 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
Terry Nali is coordinator of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-based flooring installation group, INSTALL Twin Cities.
Understand how moisture and alkalinity can negatively affect the flooring portion of any commercial, residential, institutional new or renovated building project. Learn how to identify the presence of the incorrect patching and leveling compounds and understand how the use of improper material can negatively affect the flooring portion of any new or renovated building project. Learn to identify floor failures (before they happen) that are caused by poorly prepared sub floors and understanding how to overcome this situation to maintain integrity of the entire flooring portion of a project.

Upcoming APRIL 2008 Webinars:
CSI Webinar: The Firestopping Quality Process
4/15/2008
Speaker: Bill McHugh, CSI, Executive Director, Firestop Contractors International Association
Description: The Firestopping Industry has evolved significantly since its inception in 1978. Firestopping is part of Effective Compartmentation including fire and smoke resistance rated floors, walls, and the related compartmentation features that protect openings and penetrations in these important life safety systems. Whether fire dampers, rolling or swinging fire doors and builders hardware, firestop systems, fire rated glazing, fire and smoke resistance rated walls and floors are protected with ever improving systems.
Firestop systems are an important part of effective compartmentation. These products become systems when tested and listed. Also, maintenance is important regardless of compartmentation element, and firestopping systems are no different. However, firestop systems, like the fire wall, may need repair only if damaged by building operations.
This presentation brings a complete view of the firestopping industry for better design, installation, inspection and maintenance of this important fire and life safety service.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the test standards for penetration and joint firestop systems
- Understand the installation standards for firestopping
- Understand the inspection standards and maintenance code requirement for firestopping

CSI Webinar: Sharing Information Electronically during Construction Administration
4/17/2008
Speaker: Roger Johnson, CSI, CCCA, AIA, Director of Construction Administration, AndersonMasonDale Architects
Description: The volume of documentation created during the Construction Administration phase of a project can be almost overwhelming. Managing the CA process during construction and accessing information during the project and after completion can be very time intensive. To assist with the management of information, some firms are utilizing Web based services and others are utilizing in-house Project Information Management (PIM) software. About 3 years ago, the speaker's firm switched from Web based document management during design phases to in-house software for Design phases that would also support the CA documentation.
What have we learned over the past three years and has PIM for CA been improved over this period? This Webinar will review some of the functions to consider when evaluating Web based or In-house PIM systems. Hardware requirements and software performance will be reviewed as compared to Web subscription services. Site Administration for security of site information along with managing site access by internal and external team members will be reviewed. Project examples will demonstrate some of the benefits we have found from using in-house PIM during CA.
Learning Objectives
- Understand things to consider for web based or in-house hardware/software for Project Information Management (PIM).
- Learn How modifying information documentation methods affect the project, support the firm and better support the team members (consultants, owner, contractor).
- Project examples will be provided to demonstrate site/project setup, use of templates, what works, and what we have learned using in-house PIM.

CSI Webinar: The Nuts and Bolts of Smart Buildings
4/22/2008
Speaker: Jim Sinopoli, Principal, Smart Buildings
Description: The smart buildings program provides simple, straight forward information on smart buildings for designers and contractors. The program covers the economics, and the basic design and specification foundations, technology systems, and management systems associated with integrated building systems. Session participants will learn the systems that should be part of a smart building, and the design, specification and installation issues related to the infrastructure of a smart building. Beyond the technical aspects of smart buildings, participants will learn how to cost justify the smart building approach to the client, and how to get the design team on board for doing something slightly different. A case study will be used to illustrate how the team, the client and the technology come together to design and specify a smart building.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify the technical systems and their interrelationships in a smart building.
- Participants will examine the impact of smart buildings on design and specification issues.
- Participants will be able to identify the changes and coordination that has to take place within the design team to successfully design a smart building.

CSI Webinar:Communication 2.0: Choice, Clarity and Civility From e-mail to v-mail to telephone conversations to person-to-person meetings
4/29/2008
Speaker: Flo Schell, EdM, Founder, Franchise Coaching Systems
Description: Gone are the days when we always meet our clients for the first time at face-to-face meetings. Often today’s professionals are meeting and greeting clients for the first time via websites, e-mails, webinars, blogs, and streaming videos. In all these cases, the opportunities to connect and meet can be fraught with new difficulties.
There are definite ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ in the world of technological communication:
- Will my e-mail sound the way I intend it to?
- Are there times when an e-mail is just not appropriate?
- Will my voice mail message have just the right tone and message?
- How do I get past the gatekeepers?
- As the world continues to reinvent itself, so must we reinvent the way we meet, greet, and converse.
How can we make the best impression possible, get our thoughts across accurately, and build solid relationships in our high-technology world? And how can we know which mode of communication is best for a given situation?
